Green Initiatives

During 2007 the subject of climate change and global warming was on everyone’s lips. At BCS we offset the diesel fuel we used last year by planting trees in the Murray Basin . It was a good start but we decided that it wasn’t nearly enough so you will see a few more changes in 2008 aimed at reducing our carbon footprint.

Four initiatives are designed to reduce our overall paper consumption by around 80%. In 2008, Brian will gather his report data electronically which eliminates the paper forms he has used to date; one sheet for each unit tested. Our reports have been re-designed so that they fit on a single sheet of A4 instead of the usual two and for about a third of our clients who have provided email addresses, the annual reminder will now be delivered by email. We have installed a virtual fax which converts all the faxes we receive into emails so that they can be received and read on-line.

We have set ourselves a target to reduce our fuel consumption in 2008 by 10%. We believe we can achieve this by redesigning the routes we take to avoid unnecessary detours and duplication. For a small number of our clients this may mean that   their testing date is moved. Only a minority of clients will be affected and we will liaise with those clients to minimize inconvenience. In the event that testing is moved forward by more than a month, we will pro-rata the fees to ensure that there is no financial penalty.

Lastly we will install solar panels to reduce our reliance on grid electricity and of course we will plant more trees.

Taken together these initiatives will not reduce our costs by much, nor will they in themselves have much of an impact on climate change but imagine for a moment if every business in Australia was able to achieve similar reductions ….
