Testing and Tagging of electrical devices

Practice owners and/or persons in control of healthcare facilities have a common duty of care under health and safety laws to provide safe places of work for their employees. AS/NZS 3760 provides a standard for the "In-service safety inspection and testing of electrical equipment". Various state bodies such as Workcover in NSW mandate testing to this standard for electrical appliances used in the workplace. Typical appliances that are found in health care establishments are listed below. The following table shows the testing interval and the relevant statutory body in each state.

Tests required by the standard

AS3760 mandates the following inspections and tests:

Inspection of equipment including plugs and accessories to ensure no live or dangerous moving parts are exposed.
Insulation test
Conductor continuity test
Polarity check
Lead is properly tagged
